Google Ads for plant and garden stores

Short answer

Garden retail has no clean benchmark. LocaliQ's 2026 home and home improvement row, which includes landscapers and contractors, paid $8.33 a click and $90.92 per conversion; shopping and gifts, closer to houseplants bought as gifts, paid $4.14 and $49.40. Plant stores live on a short spring window and on searches that name the exact plant and pot size.

LocaliQ 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks, US search campaigns, April 2025 to March 2026. LocaliQ reports cost per lead; for a store, read it as cost per conversion, which can include actions other than purchases. Shopping and Performance Max costs are not broken out.

Neither row is plant or garden retail. Home and home improvement mixes garden suppliers with landscapers, remodelers and other services, so its costs run high for a store.[1] Shopping and gifts is closer for houseplants and garden gifts. Treat both as a range and replace them with your own data after a season.

What moves plant store ROAS

  • The calendar. Most garden revenue arrives in a few spring weeks. Missing them costs more than any bid setting.
  • Plant names. Shoppers search the common name and the variety ("pink princess philodendron", "honeycrisp apple tree"). Generic titles miss them.
  • Pot size and plant size. A 4 inch nursery pot and a 10 inch floor plant are different purchases. Say which one in the title.
  • Care-question traffic. Many plant searches come from owners asking how to keep a plant alive. They click and don't buy.
  • Arrival condition. Plants that arrive damaged become refunds. Count kept revenue when judging a product group.

Break-even ROAS for a sample plant store

A made-up online nursery sells houseplants and planters with a $70 average order and a 50% gross margin.

Break-even ROAS: 1 / 50%2.00x
Highest CAC on the first order: $70 x 50%$35.00
First-order ROAS at the shopping and gifts cost per conversion: $70 / $49.401.42x
First-order ROAS at the home and home improvement cost per conversion: $70 / $90.920.77x

At either benchmark the first order loses money. Plant stores close that gap with larger baskets (a plant plus a planter plus soil), with statement plants at higher prices, and with repeat buyers who keep adding to their collection. Cut care-question searches first; they inflate cost per sale without adding orders.

Campaign mix for a plant or garden store

Plants sell on the photo and the exact variety, so Shopping does most of the work and Search covers named rare plants.

Feed and title tips for plant stores

Merchant Center titles can hold 150 characters, and shoppers usually see 70 or fewer.[2] Put the plant name and variety first, then the size.

  • Common name, then variety, then pot size and plant height. Add the botanical name for collectors.
  • Say live plant clearly, so it isn't confused with an artificial plant in the results.
  • For outdoor plants add hardiness zones in the description and product highlights.
  • Use a custom label for seasonal stock so spring-only plants can be switched off on time.
  • Show the plant at its real size, ideally next to something familiar for scale.

Garden seasons and budgets

Seeds and bulbs sell first, from January into March. Live outdoor plants and trees peak from March to May, earlier in warm zones and later in cold ones, so geography matters: a single national campaign spends in the north before anyone there can plant. Fall brings bulbs and trees from September. Houseplants hold steadier and lift around Mother's Day and the holidays.

In peak weeks a campaign can spend up to twice its average daily budget on a busy day, and no more than 30.4 times it in a month, so set daily budgets with that in mind.[4] For a short spring sale, a seasonality adjustment works best on events of 1 to 7 days.[3]

Common questions

How much does Google Ads cost for an online plant store?

You set the budget. LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks have no plant or garden retail row. The nearest are home and home improvement at $8.33 per click and $90.92 per conversion, a row dominated by service businesses, and shopping, collectibles and gifts at $4.14 and $49.40.

When should a garden store spend the most on Google?

From late winter through early summer, starting with seeds and bulbs in January and February and peaking with live plants from March to May, depending on your growing zones. Fall bulbs and trees give a second, smaller window. Houseplants sell more evenly through the year.

Why do plant stores get so many clicks that don't buy?

Many plant searches are care questions: why are my leaves yellow, how often to water a monstera. Those people already own the plant. Add care and problem words as negatives and keep your care guides for organic search.

What ROAS does a plant shop need?

Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by gross margin, so a 50% margin needs 2.0x. Single small plants rarely reach it on the first order. Bundles, planters sold with the plant and larger statement plants bring the order up to a level Google can pay for.

Can RunAds run Google Ads for my plant or garden store?
