Google Ads for pet product brands

Short answer

Animals and pets had one of the better search rows in LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks: $4.06 a click, with 16.22% of clicks converting at $31.50 each. Food, treats and litter margins are thin, though, so most pet brands only profit once a customer reorders. The feed has to say which animal, breed size and life stage each product is for.

What moves pet store ROAS

  • Reorders. Food, treats, litter and chews run out, and the reorder rate decides how much a first sale can cost.
  • Margin by product type. Food runs thin, while beds, toys and accessories usually carry more. Give them separate targets.
  • Bag and box sizes. Large bags raise order value; small trial sizes win first orders. Both need their own listings.
  • Breed size and life stage. Searches name them ("large breed puppy food"), and the feed should too.
  • Big-box competition. Large pet retailers own the generic terms. Specific formulas, materials and breed needs are cheaper to win.

Reorder CAC for a sample pet brand

A made-up brand sells air-dried dog food and treats. Its average order is $55 at a 45% gross margin, and a typical customer orders six times a year.

$55 average order, 45% gross margin

Break-even ROAS: 1 / 45%2.22x
Highest CAC on the first order: $55 x 45%$24.75
Highest CAC over 6 orders a year: $24.75 x 6$148.50
First-order ROAS at the animals and pets cost per conversion: $55 / $31.501.75x

The first order falls short of break-even at the category benchmark, and six orders a year make the same customer worth several times the cost of winning them. That's why pet food brands push first-order offers and subscriptions. Measure campaigns on customers won and their repeat revenue, and give accessories with higher margins their own first-order target.

Campaign mix for a pet product store

Organize by animal first, then by product type. Dog and cat shoppers search differently and buy at different values.

Feed and title tips for pet products

Merchant Center titles run up to 150 characters, and shoppers usually see the first 70 or fewer.[2] Submit the GTIN for any product that has one; Google says products sent without a GTIN they have may show less.[3]

  • Name the animal in every title, even when the store only sells dog products.
  • Add breed size and life stage (small breed, large breed, puppy, senior) where they apply.
  • Give the protein or flavor for food and treats, and the material for toys and beds.
  • State bag weight, count or bed dimensions, and list each size as its own variant.
  • Keep health wording out of food and accessory titles; supplement claims follow separate rules.

Pet seasons and budgets

Consumables sell steadily all year, so brand and food campaigns need few seasonal changes. Accessories, toys and beds peak in November and December, when owners buy gifts for their pets. New-puppy and new-kitten searches tend to rise after the holidays and in spring, and summer brings cooling mats, travel gear and outdoor toys.

For Black Friday or another 1 to 7 day sale, add a seasonality adjustment so Smart Bidding expects the higher conversion rate. Google says they're less useful past 14 days.[4]

How RunAds runs Google Ads for pet brands

Common questions

How much do Google Ads cost for a pet products store?

You set the spend. LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks show animals and pets at $4.06 per click and $31.50 per conversion, with 16.22% of clicks converting. That row isn't split by business type, so it may include pet services as well as stores.

What ROAS does a pet food or treat brand need?

First-order break-even is 1 divided by gross margin, so a 45% margin needs about 2.22x. Consumable pet brands often accept less than that on a first order because customers buy the same bag every month or two. Set the target from a year of gross profit per customer.

How should pet products be titled in Google Shopping?

Product type, animal, breed size or life stage, flavor or material, then size or count. "Grain free salmon dog food for small breed adults, 4 lb" matches far more searches than a recipe name alone.

Do pet supplements follow different Google rules?

Yes. Supplements and anything making a health claim for animals sit under Google's healthcare and claim rules. The pet supplements guide covers what you can say and how to set up Shopping for those products.

Can RunAds run Google Ads for my pet brand?

Yes. RunAds is an AI agent that builds Shopping, Performance Max and Search campaigns from your catalog, writes the ads and checks the account every day. You approve every launch and budget change, and the account costs nothing to open.
