Google Ads for toy and game stores
Toys fall under LocaliQ's shopping, collectibles and gifts category, which paid $4.14 a click and $49.40 per conversion in its 2026 report. For most toy stores the year is decided between Black Friday and the last order date before Christmas, and the buyer is an adult: a parent, grandparent or gift giver searching by age, interest and price.
Toy costs from the gifts category
| Category | Data period | Cost per click | Click-through rate | Conversion rate | Cost per conversion |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopping, Collectibles & Gifts[1] | Apr 2025 to Mar 2026 | $4.14 | 8.28% | 4.01% | $49.40 |
| Arts & Entertainment[1] | Apr 2025 to Mar 2026 | $1.63 | 12.75% | 5.91% | $26.84 |
| All industries[1] | Apr 2025 to Mar 2026 | $5.42 | 6.64% | 8.18% | $66.69 |
LocaliQ doesn't publish a toy or game row. Shopping, collectibles and gifts is the nearest retail category.[1] Arts and entertainment includes venues and events as well as hobby stores, so its cheap clicks are a loose guide for board game and puzzle shops at best.
What moves toy store ROAS
- Q4 concentration. Competition for toy searches rises in November and December. A store that can't hold stock through December leaves the best weeks unfunded.
- Price competition. Branded toys appear from many sellers in one Shopping result. Your offer and availability decide who gets the sale.
- Age range. Parents search "toys for 3 year olds" and "games for 10 year olds". A title without an age misses them.
- Hot-toy spikes. One toy can take over a season's searches and sell out. Pull budget off items as soon as they go out of stock.
- Margins. Branded toys often carry thin margins, which raises the break-even ROAS. Your own-brand and exclusive items can carry more of the ad spend.
Break-even ROAS for a sample toy store
A made-up online store sells wooden toys and family board games. The average order is $55 at a 45% gross margin.
$55 average order, 45% gross margin
At the gifts benchmark the first order falls short of break-even. Toy stores make it up in Q4, when shoppers buy several gifts in one order, and with bundles such as a game plus an expansion. A store that only breaks even in spring can still profit across the year if December baskets are large enough.

Campaign mix for a toy or game store
Toy shoppers compare products and prices side by side, so the feed carries most of the weight, with Search for age and interest queries.
| Campaign | Built from | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Max (feed) | Asset groups by age band (baby, preschool, 5 to 8, 9 to 12, family) | Main sales campaign. Images and video of the toy in use, aimed at the adults buying. |
| Standard Shopping | Branded toys and games with GTINs | Separate budget and target, since these face the most price competition. |
| Search, brand | Store name, store name plus toy | Keep it apart so it doesn't hide weak non-brand results. |
| Search, non-brand | Age plus type ("stem toys for 8 year olds", "cooperative board games") | Phrase and exact match, each to a collection filtered by age. |
| YouTube or Demand Gen | Unboxing and play videos, gift guides | From late October, aimed at parent and gift-giver audiences. |
Feed and title tips for toys
Titles can be 150 characters; shoppers usually see 70 or fewer.[2] Submit GTINs for branded products, since products with a GTIN submitted without one may get limited visibility.[3]
- Brand and product name first for branded toys; toy type first for your own designs.
- Put the age range in the title (Ages 3+, Ages 8 to 12). It's how parents filter.
- For games add player count and play time. Board game buyers compare both.
- Set the age_group attribute where it applies, and list piece count for building sets and puzzles.
- Put safety certifications in the description only if the product holds them.

Negative keywords for toy stores
Toy searches attract free printables, game rules and app searches. Negatives don't cover close variants, so add plurals.[6]

Toy seasons and budgets
Toy sales build from late October and peak from Black Friday to the last order date before Christmas, then drop sharply. Birthdays keep a steady base through the year, and Easter, back-to-school and summer travel bring smaller lifts for activity toys and games. Set Q4 budgets in September, with stock levels in hand, because bidding needs time and a sold-out hero product wastes spend.
For short events such as Black Friday to Cyber Monday, a seasonality adjustment tells Smart Bidding to expect a higher conversion rate. Google recommends it for 1 to 7 days and says it works less well beyond 14.[5]
Children, teens and toy ads
Google's protections for children and teens keep ads for some categories, such as food and drink, beauty and dangerous products, away from children on YouTube, Display and Display & Video 360.[4] Toy ads work better aimed at adults in any case: target parent and gift-giver audiences, and write about age range, learning and play time.

Common questions
How much does Google Ads cost for a toy store?
You choose the budget. LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks have no toy row; the closest is shopping, collectibles and gifts at $4.14 per click and $49.40 per conversion. Arts and entertainment, which covers some games and hobby businesses, averaged $1.63 a click. Expect toy clicks to cost more in December than in March.
Who should toy ads target?
The adults who buy. Google's protections for children and teens keep some ad categories away from children on YouTube and Display, and children don't hold the credit card anyway. Write for parents and gift givers: the age range, what the toy teaches or does, and how long it holds attention.
What ROAS does a toy store need?
Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by gross margin. Toys often run on thin margins, so a 45% margin needs about 2.22x and a 35% margin needs about 2.86x. Q4 baskets with several gifts are where most stores get above it.
Should toy listings include GTINs?
Yes, for branded toys and games. They're sold by many retailers, so Shopping groups identical products, and Google says products with a GTIN submitted without one may have limited visibility. Handmade and private-label toys can use your brand and an MPN.
