Google Ads for wine and spirits

Short answer

Yes, Google allows ads that sell beer, wine and spirits, but only in the countries on its alcohol list (the US, UK and Canada are on it), never aimed at people under the legal drinking age, and with no suggestion that drinking brings health, social, sexual or performance benefits. Drinks at 0.5% ABV or more must show the ABV on the landing page. Within those rules a winery or distillery can run Shopping, Performance Max and Search like any other store.

Wine and spirits ad costs: no reliable benchmark

We found no public benchmark for alcohol ecommerce on Google that we could check at the source, with a stated date range and sample size. Costs vary with the bottle price, the region you can legally sell in and how many wineries or distilleries bid on the same varietal or style, so this page gives no cost table.

Plan from your own margin instead (the worked example below), run for a month, then set targets from your account's cost per sale.

What drives wine and spirits ROAS

  • Where you can sell. Google allows alcohol ads only in listed countries, and your licenses decide which states or regions you can sell into. Target only those.
  • Bottle price and case size. A three-bottle or six-bottle order covers the cost of a sale that a single bottle can't.
  • Club members. A wine club or spirits subscription spreads the cost of the first sale across several orders.
  • Varietal and style searches. "Willamette Valley pinot noir" and "cask strength bourbon" carry more intent than "red wine".
  • Age-gated pages. Landing pages need an age check and, for drinks at 0.5% ABV or more, the ABV, which affects page design.

Margin math for a sample winery

A made-up winery sells direct with a $95 average order (usually two or three bottles) and a 45% gross margin. Club members buy about three times a year.

Illustration, not a quote

$95 average order, 45% gross margin

Break-even ROAS: 1 / 45%2.22x
Highest CAC on the first order: $95 x 45%$42.75
Highest CAC over 3 orders a year: $42.75 x 3$128.25

One-off buyers need a cost per sale under the first-order figure. Club sign-ups can carry the higher yearly figure, so track them as their own conversion with a higher value and let bidding pay more for them.

Campaign mix for a wine or spirits brand

Location targeting comes before anything else: only listed countries, and inside them only the states or regions where you hold the right licenses.[1] Google's alcohol policy also lists formats that can't promote alcohol, including dynamic search ads, discovery ads and Gmail ads, so leave those out of the plan.

Feed and title tips for wine and spirits

Merchant Center titles can run to 150 characters, and shoppers usually see the first 70 or fewer.[3] Producer, varietal or style, region and vintage are what buyers compare, so they come first.

  • Order the title as producer, wine or spirit name, varietal or style, region, vintage, bottle size.
  • Put the ABV in the product description and on the landing page for every drink at 0.5% ABV or more.
  • List gift sets and multi-bottle packs as their own products with the bottle count in the title.
  • Use the region's legal name (Napa Valley, Speyside) exactly as the label states it.
  • Keep tasting language factual (oak, tannin, finish). Leave out anything about mood or effect.

No images of people drinking while driving or doing anything that needs focus, nothing aimed at under-21 audiences, and nothing about how the wine makes you feel.

Wine and spirits seasons and budgets

November and December carry the year for gift sets and premium bottles, with corporate gifting starting in October. Spring and fall release dates drive club sign-ups, and rose and white wine lift in late spring. Give gifts and club campaigns their own budgets so the Q4 rush doesn't starve the club.

For a release weekend or a 1 to 7 day sale, a seasonality adjustment tells Smart Bidding to expect more sales.[6]

Google's alcohol rules in practice

Google Ads allows ads that sell alcohol in the countries on its list, the United States, United Kingdom and Canada among them. Ads must not target, or mainly appeal to, people under the legal purchase age. The policy bans suggesting alcohol improves physical, mental, social or sexual standing, removes inhibitions or has health benefits; encouraging excessive drinking; showing drinking before activities that need sobriety; and themes that appeal mainly to minors. Drinks at 0.5% ABV or higher must show their ABV on the landing page.[1]

For Shopping ads and free listings, Merchant Center allows alcoholic drinks and home brewing kits only in approved locations, and listings must not target minors: anyone under 18, or under the local drinking age where that is higher.[2]

Google's rules sit on top of your licenses. Check which states and countries you can legally sell into before you set location targets.

How RunAds runs Google Ads for wine and spirits brands

What the agent does for you

  • Builds Shopping, Performance Max and Search campaigns limited to the countries and states you confirm you can sell in.
  • Writes copy that describes the wine or spirit and checks it against Google's alcohol claims before you see it.
  • Tracks club sign-ups as their own conversion so bidding can value them above a one-off bottle.
  • Reads search terms daily and removes recipe, calorie and bar searches that spend without orders.

Common questions

Can you advertise alcohol on Google Ads?

Yes, in the countries Google lists for alcohol ads, which include the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. A campaign aimed only at unlisted countries is disapproved, and one aimed at both runs only in the listed ones. Ads must not target or mainly appeal to people under the legal purchase age.

What can't wine and spirits ads say on Google?

Google bans copy that suggests alcohol improves physical, mental, social or sexual standing, that it removes inhibitions, or that it has health benefits. Ads can't encourage excessive drinking, show drinking before activities that need sobriety, or appeal mainly to minors. Misleading claims about strength, or leaning on high alcohol content, are also out.

Can I sell wine through Google Shopping?

Yes, where alcohol is allowed. Merchant Center permits Shopping ads and free listings for alcoholic drinks and home brewing kits in approved locations, as long as they don't target minors, defined as under 18 or the local drinking age if that is higher.

What ROAS does a wine brand need on Google?

Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your gross margin, so a winery selling direct at a 45% margin needs about 2.2x on a one-off order. Club members who buy several times a year let you accept a lower first-order ROAS.

Can RunAds run Google Ads for my winery or distillery?

Yes. RunAds is an AI agent that builds the campaigns, writes copy within Google's alcohol rules and checks the account every day. You set the countries and states you sell in and approve every launch. Signing up is free.
