Google Ads for shoe brands

Short answer

Footwear falls under LocaliQ's apparel category, where 2026 search clicks cost $4.44 and 4.50% converted. Shoe brands profit on Google when every size and width is its own variant in Merchant Center, because Google requires size and gender for shoes, and because a shopper searching a model name in her size buys at a far higher rate than one typing "women's shoes".

LocaliQ 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks, US search campaigns, April 2025 to March 2026. LocaliQ reports cost per lead; for a store, read it as cost per conversion, which can include actions other than purchases. Shopping and Performance Max costs are not broken out.

There's no footwear row in LocaliQ's 2026 report, so this uses the apparel, fashion and jewelry category as the nearest match.[1] Sports and recreation is shown for running, hiking and court shoes, which compete with sporting goods sellers.

What moves shoe ROAS on Google

  • Size depth. Shoes are sold one size at a time. A style with half its sizes gone keeps drawing clicks, and those shoppers leave.
  • Width. Wide and narrow feet are an underserved search. A brand that carries 2E or narrow widths and says so in the title wins those buyers.
  • Model-name demand. Searches for a named model are cheap and close to the sale. Building that demand on YouTube and Meta pays off in Search.
  • Returns. Fit-driven returns hit footwear hard. A high-return style can look profitable in Google Ads and lose money after the box comes back.
  • Marketplaces. Big retailers carrying your shoes compete with you on your own model names in Shopping. Keep your price and stock data current so your listing is the better click.

Break-even ROAS for a sample shoe brand

A made-up brand sells leather sneakers and loafers with a $130 average order and a 50% gross margin.

$130 average order, 50% gross margin

Break-even ROAS: 1 / 50%2.00x
Highest CAC on the first order: $130 x 50%$65.00
First-order ROAS at the apparel and jewelry cost per conversion: $130 / $97.511.33x
First-order ROAS at the sports and recreation cost per conversion: $130 / $44.262.94x

At the apparel benchmark the brand sits well below break-even on the first pair; at the sports figure it clears it. Most shoe brands get there through model-name searches and Shopping traffic, which usually cost less per sale than broad search, and through the second pair from customers who know their size.

Campaign mix for a shoe brand

Shoppers compare shoes by picture and price, so Shopping placements matter most. Search earns its budget on model names and fit problems.

Feed and title tips for shoes

Merchant Center requires size, color, gender and age group for shoes sold in the US and five other countries.[2] Google's own footwear title advice is to include gender, size and color; titles run to 150 characters, with about 70 visible.[3]

  • Write gender, shoe type, model name, material, color and size, in roughly that order.
  • Add width to the size value (10.5 Wide) so a wide-fit searcher matches the right variant.
  • Submit a GTIN for each size where you have one; marketplaces selling the same shoe already do.
  • Use size_system (US, UK, EU) when you sell across countries, so sizes aren't misread.
  • Use a side-profile shot as the main image, and add sole and on-foot images as extras.

Search keywords for a shoe brand

Shoe searches get specific fast. The more of the model, fit and material a query names, the closer it is to a sale.

  • suede chelsea boots men
  • waterproof leather hiking boots

  • wide width loafers men
  • narrow heel ballet flats
  • half sizes women's sneakers

Negative keywords for footwear stores

Footwear queries pull in repair, cleaning and resale traffic. Add these, and include plural forms yourself because negatives ignore close variants.[4]

  • shoe repair
  • cobbler
  • cleaner
  • how to clean
  • stretch
  • laces
  • insoles only
  • used
  • secondhand
  • resale
  • replica
  • custom painted
  • wholesale
  • bulk

Footwear seasons and budgets

Shoes follow the weather. Sandals and canvas sneakers sell from March to July, boots from September to January, and back-to-school lifts kids' and sneaker sales in July and August. Running shoes see a January lift from fitness resolutions. Move budget between product groups as the season turns instead of raising the whole account.

For a sale of a few days, a seasonality adjustment warns Smart Bidding about the conversion jump. Google suggests them for 1 to 7 day events, and they work less well past 14 days.[6]

Common questions

How much does Google Ads cost for a shoe brand?

LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks don't list footwear on its own. Its apparel, fashion and jewelry category paid $4.44 a click and $97.51 per conversion, and running or sport shoes may land closer to sports and recreation at $2.77 a click. Shopping and Performance Max costs aren't in either figure.

Which feed attributes do shoes need in Merchant Center?

Size is required for shoes in the US, UK, Germany, France, Japan and Brazil, along with color, gender and age group. Add width as part of the size or in the title (Wide, 2E) and use size_system if you sell in more than one country.

Should I bid on my shoe model names?

Yes. Once a model has a following, people search it by name, and those searches convert at a high rate for little cost. Put each named model in its own brand ad group so resellers and marketplaces don't take the sale.

How do I lower returns from Google Shopping shoe sales?

Give shoppers fit information before the click and after it: true-to-size notes in descriptions, width options in titles and a size chart on every product page. Track returns by product, and lower bids on styles that come back far more often than the rest.

Can RunAds run Google Ads for my shoe brand?

Yes. RunAds is an AI agent that builds Shopping, Performance Max and Search campaigns for your footwear, fills missing size and width data and writes the ads. You approve every launch and every budget change.
